Voice Instructor
Olivia Flanigan is a singer, music educator, writer, and pianist based out of Chicago. She was born into a musical family, and music has always been a huge part of her life. She began singing in classical choirs and found a passion in singing. Olivia performs jazz gigs with her quartet, writes and arranges her own material, and performs frequently at both public and private events. She is truly passionate about teaching, and appreciates all different styles of music. She is dedicated to healthful singing, and encouraging self expression. Why do you sing? I can't remember a time in my life that I didn't. It has always felt natural to me. I began writing songs from an early age, and singing my own words and music was a needed outlet. Each time I sing, I aim to present myself in the most honest way I can so it truly feels like an extension of me. Why do you teach others to sing? I teach others to sing because I can see the value of expressing oneself. I know how valuable singing has been to me, and how much a part of me it is, so I love the idea of sharing that feeling with others. |
How do you describe your lessons? My lessons are grounded in purpose, but I aim to have fun along the way! I enjoy getting to know each of my students on a personal level and designing my lessons based on how we work best together. How do you describe your lessons? I have a background in a variety of genres, so my ability to pull from those experiences makes me unique. I create a relaxed, safe environment by taking a true interest in my students' goals, and in their musical journey. What is your favorite teaching tool? I have found that learning something in several different ways is effective. I always try to reinforce information by finding ways to relate new information to each specific student, rather than teaching the same thing the same way to everyone. What do you do with a new student at their first lesson? At a new student's first lesson, I get to know my students' musical background and and discuss goals. I will take students through a few exercises to get to know their voices, and start to develop a plan for how best to move forward! |
