Pride Films and Plays Presents:
SOUTHERN COMFORT

Description:
SOUTHERN COMFORT, a musical adaptation of the hit 2001 Sundance documentary. This heartwarming story follows the last year of Robert Eads, a transgender man in Georgia, who has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, motivating him to bring together the friends he calls his "chosen family" - who are also primarily transgender - for monthly meals of fellowship. This is the Chicago premiere of a show that was well received Off-Broadway at the Public Theatre and was described in the New York Times as a "sweetheart of a musical...with a spirited and tuneful country score". Directed by David Zak and co-music directed by Robert Ollis and JD Caudill, the creative team is particularly excited to receive submissions from transgender performers and will be working with the cast to fit/modify the vocal lines to their voices. In addition to the transgender Pride Films and Plays is now accepting submissions for its spring 2019 musical, SOUTHERN characters, a number of supporting roles are played by the onstage band of musicians who sing choral parts and play musical instruments, functioning as as the "Storytellers"; such roles are open to individuals of all gender identities. PFP is looking to cast the following roles: (Please note that we will be flexible with respect to the age ranges and body types that were suggested by the author, and persons of all ethnicities are welcomed):

CHARACTERS:
-ROBERT - Trans man/male identifying: An "electric" man in his fifties. He has the ability to seem like a wide-eyed child and a wise old prophet all at once.
-LOLA - Transgender woman who is new to the group and is the apple of Robert's eye. Lola has an interesting journey in the story, having to sometimes assume the identity of John, for work, but slowly becoming more comfortable with her true nature. Mid-forties.
-JACKSON - Trans man/male identifying full of warmth and mischief but struggling with a deep resentment and anger at the world around him. Late thirties/early forties.
-CARLY - Transgender woman: Jackson's girlfriend. A naughty Catholic school boy turned naughty Catholic school girl; tough, feminine, and confident. Late twenties/early thirties.
-SAM - Trans man/male identifying who might almost be intimidating, were it not for his extremely gentle and somewhat sad demeanor. Late thirties/early forties.
-MELANIE - Cisgender woman: Sam's wife. Spirited and full of good humor, but apprehensive of the world around her. Early/mid-forties.

-THE STORYTELLERS - An onstage folk band and chorus that serves as the "orchestra," choral singers and storytellers for the show; acting as all the characters in the piece aside from the primary six. They are the passing time and the changing seasons, Robert's parents, the haunting voices of his doctors, and so on. They serve as the storytelling backbone to our "Modern-Day Folk Tale," while also embodying the environment/atmosphere/world around our primary characters - both physically and musically.

Auditions will be held from 10AM-4PM on Saturday, September 15 (mostly for the transgender roles) and on Sunday, September 16 10AM-4PM (primarily for the singer/musicians seeking to perform as Storytellers). If you are interested please email prideactor@gmail.com for an audition time. If you are unavailable for either of these dates please contact us as well to schedule an additional audition time.

Time Commitment:
Rehearsals begin in January with performances in March and April in the Pride Arts Center, 4139 N Broadway.

Material To Prepare:
Please prepare 32 bars of a song that best shows off your voice and a one-minute monologue of your choosing. Let us know if you play any instruments, and feel free to bring them to the auditions (especially if seeking a Storyteller role.)

Chicago Musical Theater Festival presents:
"Lucky: A Musical"

This is a story about a girl named Lucky. Okay, but really, it is! Lucky is a unique young woman, whose cosmology revolves around her copy of The Care and Keeping of You sent to her by her absent mother. Upon entering college, Lucky is forced to face the reality that not every obstacle she faces will be covered by her beloved book and that maybe, her book is not as great as she once thought.

Inspired by The Care and Keeping of You, "Lucky: A Musical" follows one young woman's journey of growing up, making new friends, and understanding the wonderful, heartbreaking and magical elements of being a woman.

The Festival will host Open Call Auditions
Location: The Edge Theatre - Conference Room (5451 N. Broadway)
Date: Sunday, October 14
Time: 12-6 pm (3 minute slots)
Details: 32 bars, headshot, and resume

If actors attend the Open Call, you are eligible to audition for all the shows with producers present. If any performers are interested in auditioning for "Lucky, A Musical" but cannot attend the Open Call, send an email with a 30-second clip of your best singing (preferably, something pop) to: luckyamusical@gmail.com. We might ask them for a resume as well, or for them to read some of the script, but vocals are a great place for us to start.

All shows in the Festival will pay their actors; the "Lucky" team will be able to offer a $100 stipend to our actors.

The festival runs throughout the month of February and we will have five performances. If the show sells out, we have the potential of extending the run to more performances. Here's information on the festival: https://www.cmtf.org/

The creative team includes Gabrielle Hirsch (music and lyrics), Sarah Frasco (book and lyrics), and Jen Allman (director).
